RF OTA Testing

In communication testing, OTA stands for Over The Air, meaning ‘through the air‘. In addition to samples, equipment is also required for testing. There are two common connection methods: RF RF conduction testing, which requires connecting cables and testing instruments; OTA testing is achieved through transmitting and receiving antenna groups, without the need for cable connections.

Testing service

Deeplight Technology OTA testing service of wireless products

 1.There are two methods to test the radiation performance of wireless product.

(1) PASSIVE test:

Test the product antenna‘s radiation performance,passive testing focuses on product antenna‘s radiation performance from the antenna‘s gain, efficiency, pattern and other antenna radiation parameters. Commonly used test cases are:
Return Loss; Directivity; Gain, dBi or dBd.
Efficiency; Radiation Pattern (direction diagram).
Effective Isotropic Radiated Power (Gain + Transmit Power).
Input Impedance (antenna interface impedance test).
VSWR, RL (antenna standing wave ratio, return loss test); 3D (3D field strength map).
3dB BW, FB Ratio (beam width, front-to-back ratio).
Cross polar, Isolation (cross polarization ratio, isolation).
Directivity; Efficiency.

(2)ACTIVE test:

 In the microwave anechoic chamber,testing of the radiated power and receiving sensitivity of the product,namely TRP and TIS. This method can better reflect the overall radiation performance of the product Wireless performance. OTA active test cases:

TRP (total radiated power); TIS (Total Isotropic Sensitivity); RS (receiving sensitivity determination relative to the reference channel).
SS (sensitivity scan); EIRP (equivalent isotropic radiated power); EIS (equivalent omnidirectional receiving sensitivity)

2. TRP (total radiated power) and TIS (Total Isotropic Sensitivity) test methods and requirements.

(1)TRP test requirements

1) EUT is transmitting at maximum power;

2) Non-portable EUT needs to be tested in free space;

3) Portable EUT test under the condition of human head model;

4) In each frequency band supported by EUT, test the three channels of high, middle and low;

5) For the EUT of the retractable antenna, it needs to be tested separately under two conditions.

2. TIS test requirements

(1) EUT is emitted at maximum power;

(2) Non-portable EUT only needs to be tested in free space;

(3) Portable should also be tested under the condition of human head model;

(4) In each frequency band supported by EUT, three channels, high, middle and low, should be selected for complete TIS test;

(5) The relative sensitivity of the intermediate channel should be tested under the condition of meeting the maximum interval

(6) For the retractable antenna EUT, it needs to be tested separately under two conditions.

3.Which organizations develop OTA test standards?

1. OTA national standard introduction.

(1) China OTA test reference issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology: "YD-T1484-2006 Mobile station space RF radiation Power and receiver performance Measurement method";

(2) According to the actual situation of our country, the detailed test methods of RF radiation power and receiver performance for GSM 900, DCS 1800 and CDMA are proposed.

(3) Measurement method of space RF radiated power and receiver performance of 2GHz WCDMA mobile station, measurement method of space radiated power and receiver performance of 2GHz TD-SCDMA mobile station

2. Foreign organizations for antenna OTA testing.

4. Antenna OTA test scenario.
